Buckskin Drive by Whipple Russell Architects

D Pos - The practice of Whipple Russell Architects designed the Buckskin Drive residential project in 2009 and it is located in Laguna Hills, California offering a view toward the ocean.

The site is sloped and due to the placement of the house on the top of a hill it allows amazing 180 degree views but the location also meant that the Home Owners’ Association wouldn’t allow a contemporary design to be built there.

The designers looked on the nearby structures and found the Prairie School of Architecture which features the Prairie style but with a modern twist, having clean lines, long eaves and materials such as brick, wood and plaster so that it would integrate with ease in the traditional setting.

The interior is very elegant, warm and modern with a 4 x 4 plan grid extending from the ground floor all the way to the top floor, wooden joinery and custom cherry wood cabinets.

The front door has a trapezoidal shape pivoting on a pin and the garages were sculpted into the lot to be hidden from those that don’t need them.
